We all want clear and healthy skin but dark spots from acne, pimples, etc. keep spoiling our dreams. Sometimes it can feel like we will never be free of them. Like they are here to stay with us for life. Fortunately for us, there are natural remedies we can use to fade these spots safely, and completely.

I personally do not use any product for spots. I simply rely on food items simply because products are expensive and there is no guarantee that they will work. If they do, then you are stuck using them for life and they contain harmful chemicals. So while you might fade those dark spots, you are also harming your skin and it can lead to skin problems down the line.

These remedies I am about to discuss are those that I have used and those around me have also used them successfully to fade their dark spots naturally and successfully.  The spots I am referring to here are the spots from pimples, acne, scarring, etc. Any dark spot on your body can be bleached whether it is on your face or anywhere on your body.

Who are these remedies for?

To my knowledge, these home remedies are suitable for a range of skin types and skin colors from pale people to black people. The only thing that I cannot guarantee is if every of these listed remedies will be suitable for your skin type. These DIY recipes range from mild to rather acidic face masks so there is a recipe for all skin types

I am confident in the effectiveness of these remedies so choose which you think is best. You can also try them all to see which will work for you best

Do i need to make a new batch every day?

No. You can simply make enough for 3-4 days tops. This is because the needed nutrients in the mask gradually degrade day by day. Fresh is best, but you don’t have to make one every day. That is also what I do. I prefer to make the whole batch at once so that I am sure my recipe proportions are consistent. It also prevents me from getting too lazy for my beauty routine.

What kind of spots do these remedies fade?

These remedies are most effective for pimple spots, acne spots, some injury spots etc. General dark spots that were not part of your skin but were introduced somehow.

You can use these remedies on almost every part of your body just avoid sensitive areas such as the skin immediately under the eye, groin, etc.

DIY Spot Fading Recipes

Lemon/lime Juice

The citrus family is known for being excellent sources of vitamin C and citric acid. These two components make them a natural bleaching agent that is often used to lighten hair, spots, etc. These fruits don’t only fade dark spots but also prevent acne and reduce wrinkles with their detoxifying and collagen properties.

You can use lemon or lime depending on what you have available at home. Using pure lemon/lime juice directly on the skin is recommended because the concentration of the acid is too strong for most skin types but you can try it for yourself and see. I will recommend that you dilute it with a little honey which is a natural soothing agent. Lime has a stronger concentration of citric acid than lemon which is why you must almost always dilute it a little.

If you are using lemon/lime on your skin for the first time, do a skin patch test by dabbing some of the juice below your ear/ by the side of your face in case it will cause a skin reaction. Wait for about 20-30minutes to make sure all is well. If you end up with a reaction, then simply dilute it well with some honey or select another option from the remedies below.

How to use:

Items needed:

Fresh Lemon/lime juiced -2-4 table spoons

1 teaspoon good quality honey (optional)

Cotton ball (optional)

Method:

  • Mix the lemon juice with the honey in a small bowl
  • Use your fingers or a cotton ball to apply the mixture generously especially where you have the spots the most
  • Leave for 15-20 minutes
  • Rinse with warm water
  • Pat dry and apply some natural oil or moisturizer
  • Repeat for 7-10 days and you will see the difference.

I will advise that you don’t use this remedy for more than 10 days consecutively. This lemon/lime face mask is best done at night or at least 4 hours before you go under the sun as the citric acid in the juice makes the skin sensitive under the sun and more susceptible to sunburn

Greek Yogurt/Raw Milk

Greek yogurt is simply plain yogurt without any sugar, flavor, or additives. It has a thick consistency and a slightly sour taste. This sour taste is the lactic acid contained in plain yogurt and is the main agent that fades spots.

Of all the recommended remedies, raw milk is perhaps the most difficult to get in the supermarkets and it might be slightly more expensive too. If you are unable to find it in the supermarket, then you will need to source it from a nearby farm that raises cows. if it is too much trouble for you, then simply use a good quality greek yoghurt it works well too.

Milk is commonly used in the cosmetic industry and by people like me that prefer a DIY approach to skincare because of its moisturizing and brightening benefits to the skin.

How to use:

  • Take the milk or yogurt out of the fridge and allow it to warm up to room temperature
  • Scoop some into a small bowl (add some lemon juice if you wish)
  • Use a makeup brush, cotton bud, or your fingers to apply to the spotty area generously
  • Leave for about 40 minutes while reapplying the milk/yogurt if it starts to dry up
  • Rinse well
  • Pat dry and moisturize with a natural oil or moisturizer of your choice
  • Repeat for 10-14 days

It takes a longer period of constant application than lemon/lime juice as lactic acid is gentler on the skin. So try and be patient with the reapplications.

Raw Potato

Potato starch from raw common potato, not the Irish/sweet potato is very effective in lightening dark spots, blemishes, evening out skin discoloration, removes sunburn, etc. I may not know the science of how it works, All I know is that IT WORKS!

How to use:

  • Blend a washed and peeled raw potato  into a puree or juice
  • Transfer it to a bowl.
  • Decant some juice into a separate container as a potato is too much to use at once.
  • Dip a piece of cotton into the smaller bowl
  • Apply it to a cleansed face/skin and massage for at least 3 minutes
  • Leave it for at least 20 minutes and keep reapplying as it dries
  • You can keep it overnight or rinse it off
  • Pat dry and moisturize
  • You can repeat this recipe once a day – a total of 2 applications in a day
  • Keep the rest of the juice in the fridge
  • Use this recipe for 5-10 days

Some simply thinly slice the potato and rub it on the skin area and it works also. Simply choose which method you prefer. This is a very safe recipe hence, you can use it for more than 10 days if you wish. It won’t harm your skin. To boost its effectiveness, you can add a teaspoon of lemon/lime juice to the potato juice before application.

Turmeric

Turmeric is a root spice of the ginger family. It is available as a fresh spice in Asia but as for us in other parts of the world, we depend on the imported powdered spice we buy from the supermarket. Indians are its most faithful users. They use it in numerous ways including as a  food spice and as an active ingredient in home remedies such as colds.

Turmeric is commonly used to fade dark spots and you can find the testimonies of many on Youtube especially and other online forums. Its primary curcumin component has an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory property which eliminates acne, spots, wrinkles, dryness, etc.

It is common for this spice to temporarily stain the skin after use. This is because of its signature yellow/red colour that is commonly used to make curry powder and food coloring. Do not fret, it usually fades away within hours.

How to use:

Items needed:

Turmeric powder -2 tablespoons

Greek yoghurt – 1 tablespoon

Honey – 1 tablespoon

Method:

  • Mix the items listed above in a small bowl and apply to a cleansed skin/face with a brush or your fingers
  • Leave for 30-40 minutes
  • Rinse and pat dry
  • Apply a moisturizer
  • Repeat for 7-10 days for best results

The mentioned remedies are effective for dark spots from my experience. To give your mask a boost whichever remedy you choose, you can always add honey for its moisturizing, healing, and soothing properties. Lemon/lime juice or yogurt for added lightening benefits.

Conclusion

Knowing these basic items and their properties, you can continuously boost or modify the face masks by yourself. I wish you the best. Most of the mentioned remedies are rather simple and easily available around us without much effort. I have used all of these recipes for dark spots and as beauty masks over the years and they have proved to be effective.

You don’t have to try all of them just, pick whichever seems most suitable for you. If you encounter any issues, then select another one from the listed remedies.
