If you have the plant in the garden, you can simply crush the leaves and flowers and rub it all over the bite area.

Witch hazel

Witch hazel is commonly used as a toner and astringent. Here, it reduces inflammation and soothes the skin. It is available in grocery stores and as part of over-the-counter purchases in pharmacies.

Apply a small amount of witch hazel to a cotton wool. Gently dab the bite and allow it to dry.

Apple vinegar

Apple vinegar like honey is one of those items that seem to be the go-to remedy for too many things fortunately for us. Apple vinegar contains acetic acid which is its main component and active ingredient.

It reduces the irritation and inflammation caused by the bite. It will also disinfect the bite if you have been scratching it and it got infected.

Use a piece of cotton wool to apply a little undiluted apple vinegar to the bite. If it is too concentrated for your skin, then dilute it a little. The more concentration, the faster it will work. Repeat as needed

The remedies recommended above are safe for children and babies as long as the oils and vinegar are not used in high concentrations. It is necessary that you know how to properly dilute essential oils before using them.

Below are remedies that some swear works for them. I have searched the net for easy mosquito remedies and many swear by these. I have personally never used them, but feel free to experiment with them. They are safe for most people just don’t use them on children and babies. They should only be used on adults or at least teenagers.

  • Hot Spoon
    • The logic here is to kill the protein in the bite that makes it itch.
    • Dip your metal/iron spoon in hot water/hot tea, not enough to burn
    • Place it on the bites but do not press it down
    • A hot washcloth or how water not enough to burn will also work just fine
  • Ice
    • Ice is commonly used to numb a wound to prevent that person from feeling any pain. Same here. It numbs the mosquito bite.
  • Tape
    • The purpose here is to seal the bite from reacting with the air to cause itching. Many say it works wonders for them
  • Clear nail polish
    • This has a similar logic to the tape of not allowing air to react to the protein that causes the itch
  • Hairdryer
    • The hairdryer has the same logic as the spoon of using heat to kill the protein causing the itching on the bites.
  • Banana Peel
    • Rub the soft side of the banana peel on the bite. I don’t know why it works. But they say it does.
  • Making an ‘X’ on the bite
    • It is expected that by using your fingernail to make an X mark in the middle of the bite, it will spread out the mosquito sting and make it go away faster
  • Ammonia
    • Using a piece of cotton, apply ammonia to the bite. It will sting for a second but that will be it.
